Barbara Lehtiniemi awarded $1,000 scholarship for outstanding community leadership

Anyone who has pursued post-secondary education knows that a student's time is in high demand. The purpose of the Scribendi Community Leadership Scholarship is to acknowledge and reward students who, despite financial and academic pressures, make time to contribute to their communities.

Ms. Barbara Lehtiniemi is one such student who is dedicated to the betterment of her community, and Scribendi is excited to award her the $1,000 Scribendi Community Leadership Scholarship.

Ms. Lehtiniemi is a student at Athabasca University pursuing a bachelor of general studies degree. After identifying the need for a library in her underserviced community, she and a group of volunteers founded a community-run library.

Since the library’s inception in 2016, the shelves have been stocked with over 6,000 donated books. In addition to a wide range of novels, the library provides art and music workshops, children's activities, author visits, community events, and public computers with Internet and printer access.

Ms. Lehtiniemi said, "In our rural area, this volunteer-run library serves as an essential community hub." She regularly volunteers to work at the library so that it remains free for the public. The impact of a library is extremely important in any community, as libraries remove barriers to retrieving information, improve literacy, and provide a safe community center for those who need it.

Scribendi would like to congratulate Ms. Lehtiniemi on her scholarship and thank her for her work in the community. We would also like to extend a special thank you to everyone who applied for the Scribendi Community Leadership Scholarship this winter. Your hard work as community leaders is truly appreciated.

Scribendi is now accepting applications for the Scribendi Community Leadership Scholarship of summer 2018. Apply here today, and be sure to follow Scribendi on Facebook and Twitter for future scholarship opportunities.
